Urban stores set for San Francisco openings.

A group of urban markets offering groceries and prepared foods is scheduled to open in downtown San Francisco over the next few months, according to Bay Area reports.

The company, called Market on Market, is scheduled to open its first store in a 22,000-square-foot space on top of a BART station on the ground floor of the old San Francisco Furniture Mart — a building that now houses Twitter and other companies. Two more locations are planned in the heart of the city: an 11,000-square-foot store in a former grocery store location and a 10,000-square-foot market on the ground floor of a condominium complex.

The company’s owners could not be reached for comment. They reportedly include Bruce Slesinger and Tom Collom, co-owners of BAT Worldwide Design Partners, a San Francisco-based architectural design firm that also owns Small Foods, an urban convenience store in the city’s financial district; Chris Foley, principal with Polaris Pacific, a San Francisco-based sales and marketing firm; and Richard Hoff, who ran Napa Farms Market at San Francisco International Airport.

According to an observer quoted in a local publication, “[The first store] will function as a food court with a limited offering of wine, savory snacks and meat. It’s not built for the soccer mom walking out with three or four bags of groceries. It’s [for] the impulse buyer, the young urban professional.”

The store will sell basic groceries, though as much as 80% of the selection will reportedly be “consumable foods” meant to be eaten on site or within 12 hours of purchase, the reports said. The initial location will feature at least six sub-tenants, including a coffee bar, a juice bar, a chocolate bar, a Malaysian street food-inspired vendor, a floral shop and a skin care boutique.

There is no parking lot, and the store will rely heavily on foot traffic, including BART riders, a dense population of downtown residents and daytime workers, and heavy bicycle traffic. The reports said the owners expect most customers to shop for that evening’s dinner on their way to or from the subway.
